Workout Of The Day 7/14/2009

Supriya 235# DLSupriya breaking the gym’s female deadlift record with a huge 235# pull!  Way to go Supriya!

Those of you who went to the CrossFit Games:  I want to hear your take.  Favorite and least favorite parts? Anything you expected and didn’t see, or didn’t expect and saw?  And of course…what effect did the Games have on your attitude about your training, and about CrossFit in general?

Post thoughts to comments.

  1. Favorite part: The competitors pushing the limits, destroying themselves and then getting ready to do it all over again, the “grass roots” feel, and the fact that our affiliate was the first to the beer tent on Saturday.
Least Favorite Part: Wished the deadlift went higher, I know it was the second WOD of five that day but the competitors were pumped and would have liked to see how much they could lift
After leaving the games pumped me up for more training. I was extremely impressed with the professionalism of the games themselves (organization, competitors, fans, etc.) and wanted to punch something or lift something. I saw what focused, intense training can do for you and how far you can push yourself, although I wonder has anyone done a study on being able to lift more with a chest tattoo? Jill and I were talking about this and wondering how much more I could lift with a chest tattoo?
If I am here next year definitely going all three days.

  2. The key lesson I took from the games was that our mental limits hide our true physical and spiritual capacity. Even the most dedicated athletes tend to hamstring themselves with their ideas about what’s possible, acceptable, or elite. This weekend’s events showed us the extremes to which men and women will push themselves through competition.

The deadlifts didn’t go higher than 505 because HQ DIDN’T THINK ANYONE WOULD EVEN REACH THAT HIGH. Over a dozen men did.

We have not yet begun to test the limits of human performance.

I have been doing crossfit for a while, but I never stop learning from the athletes and the coaches involved in it. I am going to throw away my ideas about what levels of performance are possible and push myself and those willing around me into the depths of the unknown and the unknowable.

  3. I wasn’t there, but I was following it the whole time on the web and radio.

Favorite: Doing statistical analyses of the results. I’m a nerd.

Least Favorite: Being in Florida during the games! And being sick, so I couldn’t even go do a WOD after I saw the results!

I’m inspired. Like Alex said, these people are the same species as me. That means that if I play my cards right, shit’s about to get really intense.

  4. PS, Supria you rock.

  5. this place is so freaking hot!!! i haven’t sweated so much since iraq!

  6. Made Up 07/11/2009 (4rds – 400m run, 50 squats)

    Krista: 18:53
    Todd: 16:45

    CrossFit Games:

I wasn’t sure what to expect. I mean how fun can it be watching people work out. But I was pretty blown away by the entire event. It was amazing watching these elite athletes push themselves to their limits. Definitely came away from the event looking forward to train, not just work out.

Although I will say that after watching the final chipper WOD, I was a little nervous about what Jacob and Ryan would have in store for us this week.

    Favorite Parts:
Watching women with wash board abs snatch / deadlift more than I can. The crowd cheering on the athletes. How the event was run (good food, plenty of bathrooms, cheap beer, etc). Just watching the raw power on display.

    Least Favorite Parts:
I dunno, none really. My car got really dusty?

  7. I too was bummed I couldn’t be there, not that I was sick or in Florida, but it is no fun in AZ. As always the games continues to be an excellent remotivator if you are slacking in your training and in showing you exactly what drive and determination can achieve in anyone. Also I second Johnny in saying that Supriya you rock!!

  8. 400m run, 50 squats x 4 for time: 11:21

  9. 150 pushups for time–10:01

  10. Favorite Part:
Watching women with wash board abs snatch / deadlift more than my husband can.

    Least Favorite Part:
Not having a CrossFit Monterey t-shirt. boo hoo

Seriously though, in so many sports age is a factor, and it wasn’t here. I found it inspiring to see athletes who ranged in age from 19 to 46 compete head on.

  11. 150 Push ups 9:12

  12. Deadlift 1-1-1-1-1
    175, 185, 165, 165, 165

150 push ups for time (20+130 KPU)
    12:56

  13. Favorite part: seeing Miko take the win in the final event (ps, I called it after the second :D ). The fact that a foreigner won the games means that crossfit is truly on the tipping point of world domnation.
    Least favorite part:
    ……lol
